The United States faces one of the greatest health crises in our history, a surging pandemic and a response hampered by misinformation, distrust and despair.

The arrival of new strains of COVID-19 and the slow pace of vaccine rollout are creating new challenges in 2021.  Yet the arrival of more vaccines, and hopes of widespread vaccination in the coming months provide a light at the end of a very long tunnel, if enough Americans get vaccinated.

  • Across the U.S., rates of new COVID-19 remain concerning.
  • COVID-19 is now the third leading cause of death in the U.S.
  • COVID-19 disproportionately affects Black, Hispanics and other people of color at every stage, from risk of exposure, to access to testing, to severity of illness and death. Nationwide, Blacks and Hispanics are getting vaccinated at much lower rates and dying at much higher rates than white Americans.
  • Polls show that across America, vaccine hesitancy is declining.

Writers, producers, show runners and news organizations have an unique opportunity to use your diverse programming and content platforms to:

  • Educate the public about the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Encourage vaccination as a key tool for ending the pandemic.
  • Reinforce the importance of pandemic-era prevention behaviors, including mask wearing, social distancing, staying home when you’re sick and washing your hands.

While each media platform has a unique voice and approach, below we offer specific recommendations to help you integrate COVID-19 messages into your content.

This toolkit contains recommendations specifically tailored for:

  • Scripted Content
  • Reality & Unscripted Content
  • Local News
  • PSAs
